Credits
How AI usage is metered — top-ups, per-message consumption, and where to track your balance.
Overview
Credits power the AI Assistant and any future Remy-aware AI features. They're separate from your subscription on purpose: AI usage varies wildly across users, so a flat-rate model would either overcharge light users or undercut heavy ones.
Manage credits from Settings → Credits.
How Credits Work
Each message you send to the AI Assistant deducts credits from your balance. The amount depends on two factors:
- Model tier — Premium consumes more per message than Standard, which consumes more than Budget.
- Conversation length — longer conversations cost more per message because the assistant has to re-read the full thread.
The exact deduction for the next message is shown in the composer before you send. There's no hidden cost — what you see is what you'll pay.
When your balance hits zero, the composer disables and points you to top up. There's no overdraft.
Topping Up
Open Settings → Credits → Top up and pick a credit package. Each package has a fixed credit count and a fixed price. Larger packages have a better rate per credit.
Charges are processed by Stripe through the same payment method you use for your subscription (if you have one). Top-ups are one-time charges, not recurring.
Credits don't expire. A package you buy today is still spendable a year from now.
Credits are non-refundable
Once a credit package is purchased, the credits are credited to your balance and the charge is final. Unused credits don't expire — they wait until you spend them.
Tracking Usage
Settings → Credits shows two things:
- Current balance — credits left to spend.
- Consumption history — every message that consumed credits, with timestamp, model tier, and credit cost. Filterable by date.
The consumption history is your audit trail for understanding where credits went, especially useful if you suddenly notice the balance moving faster than expected.
Subscription vs. Credits
A common question: do I need a subscription to use the AI Assistant?
| Setup | What works |
|---|---|
| Free plan, no credits | Contact book, sync, notes, tags — but the AI Assistant is unusable. |
| Free plan + credit top-up | Everything in free, plus AI Assistant for as long as credits last. |
| Paid plan, no credits | Same as the row above plus paid-plan features. AI Assistant still needs credits. |
| Paid plan + credits | Full feature set. |
Some paid plans include a recurring credit grant. The grant is added to your balance on each renewal and combines with any top-ups you've purchased separately. Plan-by-plan grant amounts are listed in Settings → Subscription.
What Gets Logged
Credit consumption is logged in Settings → Credits → Consumption history, not in the Activity Log — the Activity Log is reserved for mutations against your contact book and account, while credit usage is a billing record.
Top-up charges generate Stripe invoices like any other purchase, downloadable from Settings → Subscription → Billing history.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to my credit balance if I cancel my subscription?
Credits are not tied to your subscription. They stay in your balance and remain spendable on the free tier.
Can I gift or transfer credits?
Not today. Credits are bound to the account that purchased them.
How can I cap my AI spending?
There's no automatic cap today. The practical control is to top up smaller amounts at a time — the balance can't drop below zero, so you can't overspend a top-up. Spending caps are on the roadmap.
Will Remy-aware AI use credits the same way?
It will use credits, but per-call consumption may include the cost of looking up your data in addition to the model call. Specifics will appear here when the feature ships.
Do credits show up on my invoices?
Yes. Every top-up is an invoice you can download from Settings → Subscription → Billing history.
